adidas is pulling one of its shoe designs intended to celebrate ‘Black History Month’ after receiving flak from social media users.
The sportswear company’s all-white sneakers dubbed ‘Celebrating Black Culture Ultra Boost Uncaged’ was hit with criticism for its design appearing as part of this tribute collection. The kicks is a classic uncaged variation of the adidas runner with a white colorway.
It has red, black, and purple eyelet details, with its sock-like upper featuring off-white hues. The sneakers come with a custom insole that carries the letters “CBC” with an orange basketball graphic.
When the images of the sneakers surfaced online, some social media users were confused with its aesthetic coming under this collection, as it does not represent the theme well. Nice Kicks’ director of social media Jeffrey Jason wrote on Twitter, “adidas, you’re really ‘Celebrating Black Culture’ with an ‘Uncaged‘ all WHITE ‘Ultraboost’?!”
Another Twitter user wrote, “adidas really pushed an all-white shoe and said it was celebrating black culture.”
Following the backlash, the company decided to remove the design from its ‘Black History Month’ collection. adidas commented that the series features designs inspired by the Harlem Renaissance.
It admitted that the aforementioned running shoe does not accurately reflect “the spirit or philosophy” in honoring ‘Black History Month’. As such, adidas has decided to withdraw it from the collection.
The remaining sneakers—‘Harden Vol. 3’, ‘Dame 5’, ‘Ultra Boost’ with black, purple and red colors—will hit stores and adidas.com starting 5 February.
