Just about a year before a young Madonna posed nude as a model for photography and drawing classes to make ends meet, she could only dress conservatively by way of her religious parents.
The now-Queen of Pop shared a throwback photograph that was taken on the high school graduation day—presumably between 1976 and 1977—of her sister, Paula, and herself.
In her caption, Madonna revealed that she was “embarrassed” by the fact that her family could not afford store-bought dresses, which meant that she had to sew her own outfits “from Butterick patterns.”
On hindsight, she’s thankful for those years, which taught her how to use a sewing machine.
“Notice no cleavage or bare knees!” she pointed out. “Papa Ciccone was very strict.” Obviously, conical bras were also out of the question.
The world has come to know a wholly different Madonna, a beacon of sex positivity. She has now evidently handed down these traits to her daughter, Lourdes Leon, who is often seen championing her natural body in photo shoots and red carpet appearances.
My Sister Paula and I on my High School graduation day! We sewed our own dresses from Butterick patterns. 👗 I was always so embarrassed we could not afford store bought dresses. In retrospect Im glad i learned how to use a sewing machine. ✂️ Notice No cleavage or bare knees!! Papa Ciccone was very strict. 😂 #highschool
