An appalling ad that referenced Chris Brown’s 2009 domestic assault on singer Rihanna took Snapchat users aback when it appeared on the platform recently.
It made light of the ordeal by asking Snapchat users to choose if they would rather “Slap Rihanna” or “Punch Chris Brown.” Activist Brittany Packnett and Chelsea Clinton called out the inappropriate advertisement as well as Snapchat’s approval process for the commercials running on its app.
Snap Inc. has since removed the material as it violates the company’s advertising guidelines, and apologized for the error.
The brouhaha has, however, reached Rihanna’s ears and the singer is, unsurprisingly, extremely displeased.
In a message uploaded to her Instagram Story, Rihanna lambasted the company, saying, “[Snapchat] spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV [domestic violence] victims and made a joke of it!!!”
“This isn’t about my personal feelings… but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet… You let us down!”
